Mecca transforms in preparation for Hajj 2008

I just hope it doesn't get too bad....yup that little black dot is the Ka'ba.

Future of Masjid Al-Haram (at the rate of Muslim Conversions):

Are those hotels and buildings lined up on the sides? Saudi Arabia is relatively large country can't they move the construction a bit farther back, because that right there is a little to close to comfort. I don't want a once in a lifetime (for many) religious experience to be tainted business ventures and such. Maybe i'm overreacting but I pray it doesn't come to this.

wa Salaam,

I totally feel you on that. This picture really takes the focus off the Ka'ba (since it's so small) and places it on the surrounding hotels, ie. the business and money flowing through this time of the year. There are actually hadith about the last hour that warn about those who compete in the construction of tall buildings. What disturbs me is that there are hotels (now) that are right outside of Al-Haram that tower over the ka'ba.

On another note...the Hajj itself is becoming more and more expensive every year. I wonder how necessary the cost increases are each year.
